The importance of 'school readiness'

School readiness is essential for a smooth transition to school. Being emotionally, socially and academically ready will help students build a positive view of themselves as a learner and LAUNCH them on a successful educational pathway.

When we wonder "Is my child ready for school?", we often think about whether they can read, write or count. School readiness though, is so much more that that! The transition to primary school is such an important step for young children and often a daunting leap from what they have known and experienced at kindergarten. At kindergarten they have been immersed in play and given free choice to explore, as well they should! All of a sudden, at primary school, they are expected to organise their belongings, participate in groups, maintain focus for longer periods and operate with a much larger degree of independence. This is a huge developmental leap for our little ones!

Transitioning to school is one of the biggest steps children will take in their educational journey. A successful transition positively impacts their time at primary school, secondary school and beyond. So what can we do as parents to support them?

  1. Talk and talk and TALK! Talk about school as much as possible! Your little one will have lots of questions - let them ask away. Be positive and enthusiastic about them starting school (even if you are crying on the inside!). Our kids get their cues from us, so be excited and curious and they will be too!

  2. Promote Independence: Provide opportunities for your child to be independent in small ways. For example, getting themselves dressed, packing their bag, making snacks etc. This will help them to begin developing the organisational and self-management skills they will need to be successful at school.

  3. Connect with other children and families that will be attending the same school. It is highly likely that your child will leave school on the first day with a new little bestie. However, having at least one familiar face on that first morning can make all the difference. Feeling connected will help your little one feel confident and comfortable when they walk into school on that first day!

Your child is about to begin their next big adventure! It is an exciting time. At Launch, we have carefully and strategically designed our school readiness program, in collaboration with primary school and kindergarten teachers. Through structured, sequential lessons and engaging activities, we can help support your child to build the essential skills they will need for a positive start to primary school. Read more...

Wishing you and your child lots of fun and adventures as they begin their primary school learning journey!
